The Substance

The Substance is a solid film with a really intriguing concept and some standout scenes. I loved the camera work and the action-ish sequences that added a lot of energy to the story. But what really got to me were the absolutely disgusting food scenes. While the gore was fine, it’s those food moments that had me squirming the most. The final section of the movie was great, especially the design of the monster. It was a unique take, and I appreciated the creativity behind it. That said, there’s something about the film that feels like it’s missing, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Still, I can see why a lot of people would really enjoy this one.

Smile 2

Definitely a step up from the first Smile. Overall, I enjoyed it—some creative scenes and decent jump scares, but nothing groundbreaking. The car scene really stood out in terms of acting, but the CGI outside felt so off. It gave me flashbacks to old PS2 graphics, which totally broke the immersion. The ending, though, was strong. The 'monster' reveal was well-executed, even if it had limited screen time. This year has been good for monster flicks, with Alien: Romulus and The Substance, and Smile 2 delivered its own cool moment. I can see why some might be divided on the ending, but personally, I thought it wrapped things up nicely.

It's like the movie is saying, 'Yeah, we know this is ridiculous, but just go with it.' So if you're looking for a mind-boggling, genre-bending, and utterly ridiculous movie that somehow manages to make a Ratatouille joke work, 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' is the one for you. Buckle up and enjoy the ride, and don't forget to keep an ear out for that famous dish!
