I'm on the fence about this one.
On the one hand, it has beautifully choreographed fight scenes, and the sets are beautiful too. Lush hallways and vibrant colours. As an action movie, its pretty good.
On the other hand, its all style and flash and lacks substance with very little plot going on.
The opening story of Asia and her sister Maria escaping their father seems almost superfluous as its never addressed afterwards. There was no addressing Asia leaving Maria behind, or what happened to Maria afterwards aside from a few words at the end.
Asia learning to fight in prison is a choice, which would have been served better with her learning to fight to save her sister from her father and then that fighting coming in handy imo. Also I don't think you could learn to fight like that in prison. That fighting was on a whole other level. Ex-Military, special forces, black belt martial artists kind of fighting, not prison/street fighting.
Calling this movie a Comedy is a stretch too. It had some comedic moments, but none of them were inherently funny. No laugh out loud moments. Just a bit of silliness with the whole cult thing. I'd hesitate to call it a horror too, despite the blood and gore. It was an action movie with horror elements.
That all said, Zazie Beetz as Asia was amazing, as was Patricia Arquette as Lily. They really carried the movie, I wish I could say the same for the plot. Its definitely worth a watch if you like movies such as John Wick or Hotel Artemis, as its very similar to those. Just don't expect too much depth.
