nothing like i expected it to be. over-the-top in a good way. made me really emotional. some of the humor is a bit too faux-edgy for me, but its a movie that makes you think and feel a lot about the silent stars and about the talkie revolution. its grotesque and depressing and sad. <blockquote><i>In a hundred years, when you and I are both long gone, any time someone threads a frame of yours through a sprocket, you will be alive again. Mágico, teatral e grandioso. Justa homenagem ao momento de transição do cinema mudo para o falado

So so so, Chazelle definitely made a unique movie that delivers on the premise (as I understood it) of being a love letter to film and a hate letter to Hollywood. My personal general feeling is that there is a beautiful movie here about movie history and about people being inspired to create their own stories. Unfortunately for me it's also a bit all over the place and it can get a bit too busy to my liking. I'll start with a few negative points because I really love the overall story here! - The whole thing with Tobey Maguire (except for his amazingly weird character) felt like a nightmare I wanted to wake up from. It felt unnecessary to me and didn't fit in all that well for me. - A bit too vulgar, the elephant stuff, the vomiting, the rat eating, the guy with Maguire who spat like 6 times until it became annoying,... Every individual thing didn't bother me and I even laughed with but as a whole it wasn't something I personally cared for. - Could have been a local problem, could be me being a grandpa but was that movie way too loud or what? Avatar 2 went fine for example a few weeks ago but here I almost got a headache from how loud it was. Then the GREAT THINGS - I loved loved loved the dialogue between Brad Pitt and the older lady (bad with names sorry) about inspiring someone 50 years from now who didn't even had his first breath before having your last one. It reminds me a lot of me watching movies like Indiana Jones or The Good the Bad and the Ugly with my dad when I was young and falling in love with movies. - The interesting transition period between silent movies and talkies. I find that period so fascinating and it was so interesting to see the characters adapt to that time. I was thinking back about Singin' in the Rain and I was so happy when we saw that movie playing at the end. - Just the movie making in general, seeing the actors switching into character within a second was interesting to see, the sets in general. - The ending montage gave me a big smile to see all those classics pass by. As you can see it was a very mixed bag for me. I have the unhealthy habit of giving a rating as I watch the movie and at some points it was a 9 and at others a 7. I love so much about this movie but I also didn't care for a few things. This could have been a perfect movie for me if it kept it's focus on movie making (including the realistic stuff like drug abuse and not so happy endings) and inspiring people instead of having a little subplot of running away from people who want to kill them. That's not at all the movie's fault, that's just my personal problem. I really recommend this movie especially for movie lovers but for me personally it would need a bit of cutting before it would become an amazing movie.

Chaotic but interesting! Definitely worth watching.

i already knew the ending going in but still nothing could have prepared me for that. everything else was cool tho
