Apocalypse Now
not gonna rate this one because well
first of i put this on with my husband and roommate and i have to formally apologize because it was the redux version (not intentionally chosen) and the texting was for the normal one, which meant we didn't have any subtitles since they were totally out of synch and we had to turn them off. sound mixing was dog shit (this was not my fault) (like genuinely if we put the volume higer our neigbour would complain about the sound of the music and shooting but we could never hear them talk to each other or the narration) and it dragged on and on with seemily nothing happening for basically two hours. roommate gave up first, then my husband gave up. eventually i decided to put it on with headphones, and well, i could hear everything being said which was a plus. so my first remark is that due to sound this movie should be watched with a headset.
second of, I have to say it, this movie was really fucking good for the last ~hour? 50 min? when he arrives at his destination. like genuinely fantastic. but it feels bad to rate it highly when I wanted to die from not giving a single fuck for the first two hours. mind you the version we watched was 3 hours and ~20min or something so that's a lot of time wasted.
Coppola has, for the third time now, been a director who makes movies that I like the ends of but feel drags up until then. but obviously this has to be the hardest one to watch because it wasn't even meant to be this long. I have a feeling with the Godfather films as well, that they'd be better or a rewatch, but for this one, I genuinely can even rate it until I eventually watch the original cut.
I have this feeling that the original cut is somehow a really good movie. I dont know.. I can't understate how much I liked the last hour of this movie. And my husband told me that the book also is a slow building of anticipation during the travels, all leading up until the end. And I wonder if that was present in the original, when the pacing is hopefully better and maybe if we could've heard the letters he received better.
anyways I do not at all recommend watching the redux version. but this is a movie I am incredibly intrigued by and will rewatch in the future. liked it better than i thought I would ( at least the last hour)
