It's almost like this episode was specifically answering my question about the setting, from my comment on the previous one… Kin-chan was waiting in front of a banner that said "2013" in reference to the film festival there, so this adaptation is set squarely in "the present day" of when it aired. But how do we square that with literally _none_ of the characters carrying cell phones? Setting the story in its original time period would have made much more sense than bringing it into the present day but conveniently ignoring _two_ of the most transformational technological advances of the preceding two decades. (There's little indication that the characters make much use of the Internet, either.)
