[8.1/10] At some point I’m just going to have to say “another great episode” and be done with it. Season 3 has really brought the goods, and that continues in Team Avatar’s first major encounter with Team Anti-Avatar. The clash makes for a thrilling setpiece. The initial kidnapping and chase builds tension nicely, and the notion of the bad guys being surrounded by enemies but protect by a moat creates a unique setup for the fight. (I didn’t even know lava-bending was a thing!) There’s nice beats for the characters, like Lin and Su working together to grab Korra from above and avoid Zaheer, or Bolin hitting Ming’Hua right in her combustion eye a la Sokka to make the rescue possible. This show has consistently nailed the action, and this is no exception. There’s also a nice bit of mystery starting in the second act. I have to admit that I guessed Aimwei was the turncoat fairly early in the proceedings due to the good ol’ law of conservation of characters in mysteries, but there was still a nice tense atmosphere to the gang sneaking around his house and then confronting him over what he’d done. The notion that there’s double agents around the map is an interesting one, and I like Team Avatar turning into Scoobies for an episode. The strain between Lin and Su continues as Su initially supports her sister, but then reveals that she was telling Lin what she wanted to hear, giving Team Avatar a jeep to get out of dodge and chase after the baddies. This last portion of the episode lacks some of the momentum and purpose of the earlier parts, but still works as table setting for the back half of the adventure. Overall, some nice excitement, some nice mystery, and some nice possibilities established for what’s to come!
