If my memory of her has an expiration date, let it be 10,000 years...
Two melancholic Hong Kong policemen fall in love: one with a mysterious underworld figure, the other with a beautiful and ethereal server at a late-night restaurant.

My first experience with a Wong Kar-wai film, and I'm already itching for more. The whole thing was beautifully shot throughout, and Doyle's handheld camera makes Hong Kong feel alive and claustrophobic all at once. The step-printing (I had to look this effect up lol) gives certain scenes this hypnotic, half-dreamed quality.
I think I would really give it like a 4.25... something just not there to push it into the 4.5 category.
Also, big ups to all the nice jazz music. Big fan.

Wong Kar-wai is one of the most humanist directors working in cinema right now and this fact shines through in Chungking Express. a movie about love and letting go, Chunking Express is a moving ride for anyone who has ever loved and lost. It's a story filled with quirky characters that watching them live their life in the same world as us looks absurd and yet never out of place. They fit right in, blending in with everyone, looking for and providing companionship to people they encounter along the way. This is a story of moving on and relying on healing shoulders of a stranger with a cute haircut to guide you back to yourself (if you're lucky, maybe even a better version of yourself). It's about finding love when you're not looking for it and losing it while you cling to it way too hard. While the story finds the beauty in these simple universal emotions, the camera work also carves unforgettable frames with the simplest elements of life that usually go unnoticed. an Aquarium, a busy street at night, a uniform drifiting in the wind, a soap, a stuffed animal, etc. Everything shapes this movie into a poetic filter which helps you glance at life in a more magical way. This is Wong Kar-wai's power.
and I don't know a cool way of saying this but I'm truly obsessed with this work of art.
× Best Line: If memories could be canned, would they also have expiry dates? If so, I hope this one lasts for centuries.
