beautiful film set with a really interest cast of characters - the crime genre is really suited for this era, both in this and in Les Vampires, especially as both are able to make the criminals into simultaneously very human and fantastical iconic villains with looks and skills above the average person. and the Weimar Republic, with its stock exchange and its underground casinos is just the perfect setting for this story.
dr. mabuse really impresses in all his different disguises and personas that all look very different and convincing - but his iconic eyes shine through each of them
my one complaint about this film, is that while I have no problem with a 4+ hour film, it very clearly didn't need to be this long as some scenes are painfully drawn out, and skipping ahead you probably wouldn't have missed much
