Was this episode idiotic? Insane? Brilliant? Maybe all three. I have to admit, it was a little off-the-wall even for this show, and there were a lot of parts that left me scratching my head, but at the end I still think I liked it, so that's a plus, I think? Let's start with the obvious. Reimagining a latter-day Scooby Doo with Fred putting the rest of the team under his threatening yoke, Velma as a rabid misandrist, and Shaggy as an acid flashback-having burnout is as inspired as it is dark and ridiculous. It might have been better served as *Robot Chicken* sketch than trying to integrate them into a narrative like this, which had mixed results, but it's still a cutting reimagining/almost-deconstruction of them. Then there's Venturestein, who provided the most laughs in the episode. The first person POV stuff was an interesting change of pace, and Venturestein's simpleton responses to everything led to lots of comedy. Plus, the child labor instructional videos were another avenue of dark but cutting humor, and Dr. Venture is rarely as funny as when he's devolved into full-on amoral crackpot mode (Professor Farnsworth style), where he's cajoling Brock to get him dead bodies and taking everything Venturestein does as some sign of (monetizable) progress. That doesn't even get into Brock's spiritual journey with the ever-hilarious Dr. Orpheus and his pals. This was the weirdest part of an already weird episode, but the whole dolphin fantasy, that turns into a bizarre encounter between Brock and his mentor was oddly compelling, even if it only suffices as a meager examination of Brock's murderous methods (though I take that to be the point). And the ten year old inside of me was amused by how all of it was punctuated with the assembled throwing up their tea. And I haven't even mentioned the boys finding their clones! Dr. Venture deflecting the whole thing as a Christmas present gone wrong is so absurd, and the boys so chipper upon hearing the news that it totally works. It even dovetails nicely with the Groovy Gang story to add to the Shaggy Expy's freak out. I can't say I was totally on board with this episode as I was watching it, but the more I think about it, the more I appreciate it, so that's gotta be worth something!
