[6.9/10] Hey! Black Arachnia! I was wondering when she was going to show up! The catch is that she doesn't do much here beyond beat up Cheetor and get leered at by Tarantulas which...isn’t the best introduction. It’s funny, as a kid, I didn’t really blink at her design or role here, but as an adult, it’s a little weird that the show tries to introduce her as a slinky, chesty, almost mail order bride for Tarantulas (see also: Megatron’s mention of “ulterior motives”) but if I recall, the show at least kinda sorta deals with the creepiness of that down the line. Anyway, the big issue with this one is so much of it rests on trying to fool the audience into thinking that Optimus really believes Rattrap is a traitor, when it’s obvious that the whole thing is a ruse and a ploy to infiltrate the Predacons and figure out how they’re breaking the Maximal codes. This is probably an area where watching the show as an adult hurts your enjoyment, because twists lie this which might blow your mind as a kid seem ridiculously telegraphed as a grown-up C’est la vie. Still, there’s some decent material here. The stock beats come back again in force: another Predacon coup, another consequence-free exchange of laser blasts and energy beams, another game of skulking around the Predacon base. But Rattrap’s espionage mission has a little more stakes and a little more adventure to it, given his role as a double-agent, which I appreciate. The final battle is pretty static in the end, but I at least appreciate that different factions don’t really know who’s side Rattrap is on save for Optimus. This is also a surprisingly good Megatron episode. He seems ahead of the curve both for having a way out of his own brig (I imagine as a Predacon leader you probably have to have lots of contingency plans for mutinies and coups), and him letting Terrorsaur lead because he knows it’ll go poorly is a good turn. Overall, this one is mainly notable for Black Arachnia’s introduction, which is funny because she’s not really the focus here (unlike Tigertron’s debut), but as obvious as Rattrap’s spy game is, it still gives the episode at least a bit of juice.
