[5.4/10] The obvious knock against this one is that it ends in a big giant fart joke. Silly me, when Rhinox started consuming the fruits of the “bean plant” growing around the maximal base, I thought the trick was going to be that he’d inadvertently discovered a cure. Nope, it was all just a setup for day-saving flatulence. Hooray? Suffice it to say, this is the bottom of the barrel for *Beast Wars* so far, but not just because gags about passing gas are the best they can come up with to end the episode. Even before that, this one was weak broth. For example, the entire premise of Tarantulas finding or making some sort of virus that could debilitate and even kill Rhinox could be a serious thing. Instead, it’s just an excuse to do a lot of “wall-destroying energon sneeze’ gags that don’t amount to anything. The situation never really feels significant or important because the show treats it as a joke. For another, it’s been clear to me for some time that the appropriate touchstone for this show is the 1960s *Star Trek* series. WIth that lens in mind, it’s pretty clear that the show is going for Bones/Spock frenemy energy between DInobat and Rattrap here. While neither slots neatly into those roles, the sort of professional and personal rivalry element is very much at play. The problem is that for an episode focused on that rivalry, there’s no principled reason or really any disagreement between Rattrap and Dinobot that motivates them here. THere’s the vague notion that each blames the other for what happened to Rhinox, but really, there’s nothing presented here other than that the two don’t like each other. They don’t learn anything about needing to work together for the greater good or finding common ground or anything like that. They just bicker for twenty minutes before Rhinox farts the bad guys away. Overall, this one feels like a wasted opportunity, both to take the threat to Rhinox seriously, and to further develop the dynamic between Rattrap and Dinobot.
