i wanted to give this an honest shot, but this documentary fails regardless of your stance on the Ukraine war/invasion/liberation. there's a certain nationalistic way this teacher frames pre-2022 russia as more apolitical, free, great place to live, but that the second they went into ukraine at the beginning of the war, suddenly there was. rush of propaganda that wasn't there in the prior, democratic Russia. what? and that's not to mention that there's no real debunking of the way they inform the students on why they're invading Ukraine, the only thing of any value is probably that he films certain teachers showing they disagree with what they have to teach (which also seems selfish to film if Russia is as bad as he claims it is - he flees the country but publish a whole oscar awarded film where teachers, in a home video with their full names, go against the regime? why would he publish this without protecting them then?). I am not saying there's no debunking because I agree with what the history teacher or the state-regulated school lessons teach, but because I genuinely wish this was something they would do in this. But they won't. Because this is a liberal making a film for the Americans, despite saying it's for Russians. it's not for Russians. There's a scene where his big moment of rebelling is playing the American anthem sung by Lady Gaga in the school before ripping apart the Russian flag.
This is a liberal propaganda piece made to make Russia both seem like a horrible place to live (using almost no content showing this that arent already available and published by Russia) and also somehow making the. equally victimized as the Ukrainians, because uhhh... they lose freedom of speech, which is equal to genocide, I guess. idk man this movie is weird, useless, boring, propaganda (for liberal westerners), narcissistic and self-grandicing. it's not worth a watch and it's certainly not worth best documentary at the Oscars.
