the most terrifying creature is the one who starts in the shadows and grows bigger even in broad daylight. the one who takes over your life, your home, your kids.
some people find this movie problematic but I think it's incredibly comforting for those of us left behind. it's harrowing and sad and still, at least there is heaven.
i was surprised that this is a blumhouse film. i have seen friends give it 4-5 and even 1, and i know it's not a well-liked film - but along with Wolf Man, another film this year I liked more than most, this trend of showing the harm the main characters traumas and illnesses have on their kids. without making the kids at fault or complicit in any way. love it, mostly because it hits an incredible emotional response in me.
other than that, the actual horror movie scares in this is not very scary or visually interesting. I'm glad the movie wasn't longer, because it's a bit of a drag in the beginning.
