this is the first time in a really, really long time that a piece of media has genuinely offended me to this degree. i knew colleen hoover had cemented herself as a booktok kingpin, but i’ve (unfortunately) read some of the booktok smut, and speaking from experience - none of it is this shockingly tasteless.  <blockquote><i>“from the beginning i wanted all the intimate scenes to be from a female gaze and i never wanted my bias to potentially interject and go into the film.” </i>-justin baldoni</blockquote>the intent for the movie isn’t necessarily malicious. i see what baldoni was going for by displaying domestic violence on a big screen in an attempt to spread awareness about it, but the execution is not even remotely supportable by me. the story blatantly romanticizes domestic violence and dumbs it down to an unfathomable degree. i understand that you’re supposed to root for lily, but there’s nothing i could do besides squirm in my chair as ryle mentally, emotionally, and physically abuses her. i had to pee twice so i ended up leaving the theater twice throughout the movie, but the second time, i actually needed a break from watching it, which isn’t something a drama/romance has ever done to me.  despite baldoni’s intent in the production process, blake lively herself has gone on a marketing spree, promoting the film as a cutesy little romcom to go see with your girls.  <blockquote><i>“hello, blake lively here! (colleen hoover.) and </i>it ends with us<i> is in theaters now. so grab your friends, wear your florals, and head out to see it.”</i> -blake lively</blockquote>advertising a mainstream film published by studios as large as fucking SONY and columbia that attempts to positively portray some of the hardest experiences victims of domestic violence and sexual assault experience as a fun summer film is legitimately disgusting and actively repulses me. i’d like to believe this isn’t a real thing and is the figment of someone’s imagination, but it’s real and a thing that is actively happening right in front of our eyes, and it’s vile.  i’ve been in a toxic relationship. it was the worst four months of my life. i experienced nothing even remotely up to this caliber, but some of the scenes directly spoke to me. i’ve never been sexually or physically abused, but the verbal abuse, narcissism, lack of boundaries and flat-out emotional manipulation is something i’ve experienced first-hand and it was so unfathomably upsetting to see it portrayed so shallowly on the big screen.  the cinematography and the soundtrack are the only salvageable things about this trainwreck. taylor swift, post malone, lana del rey, and ethel cain being played in such an underwhelming (and emotionally overpowering) film absolutely floored me.  the only thing that should be “ending” with this movie is colleen hoover’s career as an executive producer. i left the theater not only disappointed but revolted and with a weird taste in my mouth. fucking awful. i’d give this a zero if i could solely based on its content. i cannot (and will not) recommend this film to anybody.

I have heard good things about the book (although now after seeing this I am wondering if it reads like YA), I just feel like this was a Hallmark movie with the way it was told and filmed. And it's true: Lily's fashion is awful.

It's OK. But it isn't the best film of year.... And Lilly uff I hate the actress so long hahaha

I’m getting so sick of Lively, between poor fair like this and the avalanche of PR her and Renold’s team keeps spewing online I’m saturated with them both.
