Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life feels like three different movies stitched together with glue. The first half? Decent enough, sets things up with some okayish moments in between. But give it five minutes into the second half and suddenly we’re in Vivegam x Indian 2 territory. Kamal Haasan doing stealth kills and martial arts takedowns like he’s auditioning for a John Wick crossover? Yeah, that’s not Thug Life, that’s Indian 3, buddy.
What follows is a baffling mix of stunts, and a plot so outdated it might’ve been on a floppy disk. And I have to agree with the reviews here and say that the second half feels like it’s been ghost-directed by Siva and Shankar.
Mani Ratnam is barely visible here. This isn’t his brand of storytelling, it’s a chaotic film - utterly predictable, and tonally off the rails.
