🇬🇧🇺🇸 Tron (1982) by Steven Lisberger
I am disappointed not to have fully immersed myself in the film. There is no doubt that, at the time of its release, it must have been innovative and original. The treatment of a computer system in this way, with a sovereign, totalitarian AI, seems interesting.
We follow Kevin Flynn, a brilliant programmer who once worked at ENCOM, a powerful computer company. He is unfairly ousted after his colleague Ed Dillinger steals his video game creations. Flynn tries to prove the theft by hacking ENCOM’s central system, where the totalitarian AI “Master Control Program” is hosted. He then evolves within the computer system until becoming a gladiator in deadly games to ultimately face the MCP alongside the programs of his friends: Yori and Tron.
The film’s major issue comes from its visual effects and art direction, which have aged poorly and look kitsch. Regular scenes featuring vehicles suffer greatly from pacing, likely due to the technical complexity at the time of rendering a futuristic video game. Nevertheless, the rather dull colors of the characters provide an interesting contrast with the neon style.
The actors seem too stiff during the scenes in “the Grid” (the computer system where they operate): their performance is cold and mechanical. In the rare moments when they are in the real world, these issues disappear. Cindy Morgan’s screen time is very limited, and her character could have benefited from better development. Her performance is good. Jeff Bridges brings lively energy, a mix of humor and ease, making his character endearing. Bruce Boxleitner, more rigid, perfectly embodies the uprightness of the Tron program and displays a hieratic presence. The antagonist, David Warner, acts theatrically, which fits the character well; his appearances are remarkable and unsettling.
I would have loved to be old enough to see the film during my adolescence, in theaters, at its release. I have no doubt I would have loved the film and it would have remained in my classic top list. I should not have watched it and just stuck to the information I had: a small visual revolution, an innovative concept, and an electric, futuristic soundtrack.
It's funny how some people comment that "it's dated," that "it's visually weak"... let's just remember that this movie is almost half a century old and those effects were revolutionary.
For me, the decisive moment is Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Before that, I let any "weak" digital effects slide, but after that, no.
