it's not a coincidence that this movie, about the civil disobedience in 70s Atla, Norway over the hydroelectric power plant being built on Sapmi land, is being filmed and released at the same time as main actress Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen is protesting with fellow Saami activists and Greta Thunberg, over the Fosen conflict (the state building wind mills on Sapmi land).
the similarities between the two is striking. the ending (historical spoiler?) to this movie is, well, depressing. because they didn't win. and they still haven't, 50 years later.
I wish they would've included the unsuccessful bombing that Niillas Somby had to have his arm amputated after. mostly because I am a big fan of his. however, the character (perhaps Niillas himself but never named) constantly bringing up the IRA and bombing, gives a nod to the final conclusion to the Alta-conflict that they left out.
Ella Marie is a fine actress, and her emotional scenes felt incredibly ernest. im not convinced she was in fact acting, knowing her feelings about the conflict to begin with. I almost managed to not cry during the movie, but somehow failed in the last scene.
very much recommended, although a bit softened and liberalized account of the conflict. it pairs well with further reading, and also with the swedish movie "Sameblod" from 2017 (set in 1930) - a personal favourite of mine
