Cried

A haunting visual retelling on the horrors of Western front. Never thought this film could top the 30's <a href="https://boxd.it/1kVviR">classic</a>. Though there are certain things the classic does great, like the propaganda scene set up in a literal class room. This one certainly stands out thanks to the artistic approach. The cinematography and the editing really changes things. The beauty of shot selection and transitioning is so powerful and effective in this one. Focusing on objects, slowly building up the visual narrative with brilliant shots to the ultimate powerful payoffs. The editing and dialogue, everything together synced perfectly creating this terrifying artistic storytelling. Not to mention, the bleak score is always there constantly reminding us of the horrors the joyous and brainwashed are headed to. And the film is even more engaging considering how this one completely focuses on Paul's perspective rather than the group's. And it stays true to that for the entirety of its runtime, keeping us emotionally invested in the character and all his interactions to the environment. Some plot lines (armistice) however are redundant with the leaders on both sides look like clichéd characterless monsters. The film's themes would've still worked well without the plot lines and also with a benefit of reduced runtime. Overall, it's a great adaptation that shows the visual power of cinema by depicting the bleak contrast of life in war.

é isso galera…. pouco me importa se em técnica ele é bom. odeio filme de guerra e é isso.  “ah mas deu a nota por odiar esse tipo” sim e não. 1917 é sobre guerra e eu adoro. esse simplesmente não soube fazer seu nome, não soube se moldar, não soube emocionar. é um amontoado de cenas jogadas em cima do espectador e na minha na cabeça isso não é cinema. chega de filmes de guerra que parecem ótimo mas na verdade é uma fórmula batida e chata.
