disgusting, terrifying, petrifying, eerie, horrendous, spine schilling - I am talking about count orlok's mustache

Robert Eggers is definitely not my cup of tea. It looks great and Lily-Rose Depp acted phenomenally but for the most part I was bored and couldn't get into the movie.

Visually stunning and audibly amazing. The cinematography is incredible. Every little detail was nitpicked to create a near-perfect horror film.

More style over substance The cinematography was incredible and the acting was great but that means nothing when your story just isn't interesting. I'm all for slow movies, some of my favourites are slow burn movies, including Eggers' previous movie, The Witch. The issue is, the story just isn't interesting enough to keep me engaged. It could've easily been cut down to 1 hour 30 but for whatever reason, movies now have to be 2+ hours.

Objectively, this movie is beautiful. Just a visual masterpiece, incredibly acting, a perfect cast and such immersive set pieces. Unfortunately, for me, I found the latter half a bit slow and tiring. But still a very impressively made film.

As someone who really enjoys Gothic horror, this is pretty much the perfect Gothic tale. The vibes are _immaculate._ Visuals: There are some really beautiful shots. The use of lighting and shadows is so well done. Performances: - Bill Skarsgard, what a talent. He completely disappears into the role. The costume and makeup department knocked it out of the park on Count Orlok (the mustache was a choice, but I’ll overlook it) - but for me, it’s Skarsgard’s voice that really sells the whole “creepy, deadly, ancient evil” thing. - I’ve never seen Lily Rose-Depp in anything before, but she’s impressive in this role. There's a lot to be said about the character of Ellen in general, but I won't get into that. - The weak link is Aaron Taylor-Johnson. He’s given some really good material but doesn’t rise to the occasion the way the rest of the cast does, and actually almost takes me out of some of the scenes he's in. Music: The score is so good. There’s a scene at the end - _that_ scene - where the score truly elevates the entire sequence. Other thoughts: - The film is long and you do feel it, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it drags. I’d also argue that everything included is important to moving the story forward and really entrenching you in the atmosphere. - Eggers's films are always so well crafted. Sometimes, the issue I run into with movies like these is that they end up being style over substance, but Eggers is great at bringing both.

6.5: Cinematography beautiful. Lily-Rose Depp amazing! Nick Hoult brilliant! Bill Skarsgard properly terrifying. I mean, the gothic vibes, all there. But... the movie was still missing something for me. It wasn't bad but it didn't blow me away either.

I am struggling to provide this a review, as I found it to be a very slow movie, and sometimes hard to follow, BUT, I really think they did a fair job of revamping this movie to modernize it. I think they tried hard to show their respect to the silent classic, and it feels like this is a good updated tribute to it, but it was too stuffy and pretentious, it felt like a Shakespearian play in the movie, and it just missed the mark for me.
