Malcolm in the Middle is a comedy about intelligence that functions as both celebration and critique of the specific experience of being the smart kid in an environment that is not built for you. Bryan Cranston's Hal and Jane Kaczmarek's Lois are among the finest comic double act in American television history. The show understood that a gifted child in a dysfunctional family acquires the dysfunction along with the gift, and that this is both funny and genuinely sad.

The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries is better than its genre positioning suggests. The early seasons operate as a genuine drama about identity and history, using the vampire mythology to examine what it means to carry your past into your present. The writing is sharper than the young adult fantasy label implies, and Ian Somerhalder's Damon is a more complicated villain-to-antihero arc than the format typically produces. I watched it expecting nothing and came away with investment I had not intended.

The Sopranos

David Chase understood that the show's subject was moral vacancy, and he declined to fill that vacancy with resolution. The final scene remains one of the most debated endings in American television. I believe it is correct.

The film is interested in the triangles of obligation and desire that form between people who know each other's secrets. The acting is strong and the cinematography is restrained for the genre. I found it more involving than its premise suggested it would be, though the resolution felt too tidy for the complications it had constructed.

Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen

A Bravo network talk show in which real housewives and other reality television participants discuss themselves in a format designed to generate additional content about content. I watched one episode to understand what it was and found that understanding came quickly and completely. This is entertainment about entertainment, with no apparent interest in anything outside its own ecosystem. I respect that it serves a specific audience with great efficiency.

Infinite Challenge

Korean variety television at this scale, with a regular cast completing outrageous challenges over years, has its own internal logic that takes time to understand. Infinite Challenge is apparently among the best examples of its format. I watched five episodes and began to understand the social dynamics between the cast members, which is the format's actual subject. The challenges are vehicles for personality. Appreciating that fully required more prior context than I possessed.
