Totty started out her career as Totty Whately. She studied textiles at St Martin's School of Art in London from 1979 -1981. She left art school to take a job as a stock hire assistant at theatrical costumiers Bermans and Nathans ( now Angels) working on films such as Ghandi and Lady Chatterley's Lover.
