reviewing tomorrow. this shit sucks.
edit: “tomorrow” ended up being three days later lol sorry! i had homework!
i feel a similar sort of distaste to this heaping pile of garbage as i do <i>megalopolis</i>: a handful of great actors in a movie with a decent plot that’s disjointed and executed poorly due to a fucking abhorrent script. i knew getting into this that the newest blumhouse cook-up that was instantly on netflix after being in theaters was going to Suck Ass, but the magnitude at which this movie indisputably blows is almost wondrous.
right off the bat, the movie starts with everyone’s favorite thing in the whole world: AI-generated slop!!! the intro scene is legitimately all AI videos of normal activities that they could have just filmed. it very loosely ties into the plot (see: <i>afrAId</i>), but it still pissed me off. why, in a movie about “omg AI bad,” would you use AI for the sole reason it’s bad???? (david dastmalchian, PLEASE do a horror movie that doesn’t have AI in it. please please please.)
outside of the AI slop, THERE IS NO PLOT! if you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen this entire movie. there are maybe one or two plot points in the movie that aren’t shown in excruciating detail in the trailer. i was scared for the first five minutes of this because of how well-portrayed the atmosphere was, and then the big plot reveal/title card happened, and i stopped having fun.
with how god-awful this mess of a film is, i truly wonder if the AI they used to direct 90% of this movie wrote the script for them too! somewhere in the middle, john cho uses the word “unhoused” to refer to homeless people and his boss then replies “is that “woke” for crazy and homeless?” - which i can only hope was not written by a real person. if you’re aware your movie sucks dick, you CANNOT make it meta. they try so hard to make this meta and it insists upon itself so heavily. the only reason this is 1 star and not 1/2 is because i laughed out loud at the ending. for that alone, i have to give it props. outside of that though, the acting’s good: the script just blowssssssss.
blumhouse, for the love of god, please come up with a script for a decent plot that doesn’t make for this dreary of a watch sometime in the near future. i have no idea how this made it to theaters. absolutely do not watch. hope there’s a sequel!
