*Grave of the Fireflies* is quite frustrating as it never fully works as a tragedy because too much of the suffering feels avoidable. If Seita and Setsuko had truly been trapped with no options, the story would have hit much harder, but the fact that Seita had access to money and still waited until it was too late makes the film feel less heartbreaking and more frustrating. Instead of feeling crushed by fate or war alone, I kept feeling irritated watching a preventable disaster unfold because of his passivity and bad decisions. Setsuko’s suffering is devastating, but Seita’s choices undermine the emotional impact, so what should have felt tragic mostly came across as stupid and exasperating.

Watched it with my mother expecting something cute & fun but we both ended up heartbroken 😭

Nobody warned me about the water works. Watched this movie with my mom and we were both heartbroken. She said it was so painful that she felt the pain in her heart while I cried. Guys the world really is a cruel place. Imagine being that harsh to your sibling's children or not even helping kids in need. All they had was each other and that was enough for them. They deserved better 😭
