The Iron Giant is not scifi but the ultimate fantasy of any child. The things the robot can do wouldn't let you think otherwise. But what interested me first and foremost is how without any dialogue, the opening scene of the film represents the people's paranoia and fears of nuclear holocaust and outer space during the period of cold war. Later it goes on to become a major theme but that part is very fascinating. But the animation in that opening doesn't make it look any good, especially because of all the water. It's definitely unique but not very detailed or striking. It's almost disappointing considering what Japanese animation studios could do at that point of time. Coming to the voice acting department, Vin Diesel proves to be a perfect choice for the Giant's role, he has ridiculously deep voice that fits perfectly for a Robot. And so it's a kid friendly film that perfectly captures a child's imaginations as well as a man's dread but seems to be extremely clichéd or original for the time (as it's an adaptation of an older novel) with the antogonistic character being one dimensional and not very authentic.
