A deep focus on life under the criminal world of Rio! Based on real events, the film takes us into the raw Brazilian culture and the chaotic backside of its capital, City of God. With it's fast paced style, shaky camera work, heavy editing and intense soundtrack, the film rushes the audience into a high octane stress induced meaningful & entertaining trip. It's amazing how the film over utilizes all of it's cinematic aspects into perfection. I generally despise this sort of artificial trickery but the style is so much aptly embedded in the weight of the script, there's just no way of not recognizing it's brilliance. Not to mention it's amazing casting that perfectly captures several stages of characters through multiple child actors. Not many films have been as impactful as this, it was only thanks to the depth of the narrative that nakedly exposes the system and questions the true cause of the war through the motivations and workings of individuals, groups and countries. The drama that was involved in all of this mess is just way too real, it makes sense that it's based on real events because it is something that is stranger than fiction. I mean, we don't see a bunch of kids with guns chasing a chicken down the streets trying to shoot it everyday!

Very fuc*ing good! This is also my first Brazilian movie, and what an entry to a main cenima, to be honest i didn't expect such a story with such wonderful telling like that ... supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

já tinha assistido esse mas como foi no começo da adolescencia não lembro de muita coisa então foi como se fosse a primeira vez. pensando bem foi melhor eu não lembrar pois consegui bem sentir o impacto de cada cena e assistindo adulta consigo entender coisas que não entenderia antes. filme simplesmente fantástico, com muitas camadas e de um realismo que dói na alma. "como é aquele ditado? o sol foi feito pra todos, mas a praia é só pra quem merece"

One of if not the best foreign movie I've ever watched. I'd put this up on the pedestal right next to Goodfellas. The cinematography is top tier.
