Perfection

Is faith in oneself more powerful than God? That is the ultimate theme of the film and that is well spoken through it's brilliant narrative of multilayered characters and idealogies. But the driving force of the plot is the characters and not the theme which can be weird and is to some extent but the film manages to take audience's intrigue elsewhere while painting the sensitive subject matter carefully. The film unexpectedly starts off as a horror film and is scored as one with the eerily creepy sound & music perfectly reflecting the terrifying conditions of oil rigging on which the film focuses on throughout. The first few seconds alone basically encapsulate the aesthetic & the protagonist's personality and are enough to judge the kind of film it is going to be. And that becomes very visibly obvious in the next fifteen minutes where the visuals easily setup and exposit the protagonist and his progression throughout the years with no dialogue. Speaking of having no dialogue, the film has very minimal amount of dialogue for a 2hr film. And has it's way of expression through the performers and imagery. That little dialogue is also very encapsulating of the rage and spell Daniel has in him. And you'd think such a character cannot be reckoned but that's where the writers truly mesmerize us. I mean who could be a worthy opponent to such a force of nature if not religion! As I've stated before, cinematography is it's major asset. The frames are either filled with beautiful symmetry of the machinery the production allows for or the wide shots and landscapes of colorful plains. Whatever it has to offer is eye pleasing and understably screaming. Not to mention the unforgettable magnetic and stunning performance of Daniel Day Lewis. He is as threatening as his character is. It's beautiful how he expresses love, hate, sorrow and anger through just his face. The film completely allows for him to go all out.
