The story of three people whose lives are ever so tightly entangled in the hands of time and fate.
The original short film, La Jetee is a brilliant masterpiece that tells a simple tragic story of timeless love through just photographs. And so I thought 12 Monkeys is gonna be a mess up (even though there is potential) but how wrong am I! It is just an unbelievably perfect execution of such a mind blowing concept!
The duration makes it seem dragged but not a minute of it was a waste, the script is so tightly knit and filled with many minute details that constantly tease and remind of us the future/past/present events. And watching that is what is so fascinating for me (as it is kind of a second watch), how they sprinkled major plot points and tied all of it together in the end without any holes. And it's a wonderful choice of the writers to never force a romantic relationship that cannot have a meaningful place in the story.
The film has an overall dream-like and psychedelic environment, it absolutely succeeds in being a mind bending time traveling piece. Especially, the cinematography with the camera work particularly having bizarre camera placement for most of the scenes. Whereas the sound exaggerates certain situations for the benefit but sometimes it just felt like it was nothing more than a cheap thrill.
The production design is also something that is equally impressive, this iteration of a post apocalyptic world is as unique and crazy as one expects it to be. At first glance some of the choices seems off but everything suits it's themes and becomes visible when the movie's going to it's inevitable end.
The casting is basically dream casting and is just another instance of it's crazy perfection. Brad Pitt nails the crazy side while Bruce Willis holds his best. It came out as a suprise that Pitt is in the movie but a welcome one it is. Raised my interest for it even more. Overall, it's a great piece of work that will last the testament of time.
