The relationship between a hysterical (well written hysterical) bully of a teacher and an overly dedicated student can be highly toxic and mutually destructive but the film tries it's best to prove otherwise and even successfully achieve it to some degree.
Now, the film talks a lot about dedication which ironically Damien Chazelle seems to have. Impeccable direction, just the character positioning and the choice of camera angles and colors alone says a lot about that dedication, not to mention the fantastic utilization of drums that quite constantly races our minds by giving protagonist's perspective. The leading cast are seriously the key moving parts behind it and wouldn't work out this well without them. JK Simmons has a commanding screen presence, quite literally too, that does wonders when paired with Teller's attitude. And all of that together playing in perfect harmony can only mean one thing, a visual masterpiece.
wild movie, i think i would rather have lived a life spend doing the things i love and be content in my deathbed than have my name be spoken about at the dinner table.
I've just finished writing a 20 paged essay about the editing of the last 5 minutes of this movie so it's safe to say that it's one of my favorites. Chazelle's obsession with Jazz peaks in this dramatic clash between two genius' that feed off of each other's talent and approval. It's a story that occures a lot when you try to persue a career in the Arts, yet Chazelle manages to bring life to the story and make it worth watching. he definitely couldn't do that without the help of the editor, cinematographer, composer and the brilliant cast (J.K. Simmons perfomance was one for the ages) that accompanied him.
my only problem with the movie is that in the end we sort of come to the conclusion that the abusive teacher had all the rights to dismiss the students emotions and physically/mentally torture them. Andrew proved himself to everyone but in the end he sure needed the praise of Fletcher.
× Best Line: There are no two words in the English language more harmful than "good job".
Oh I'd have killed him. He can justify himself all he wants, he's still fucking abusive both physically and verbally.
"That's just what the world wants, now." Bitch, it's better than suicide. Omg I got so pissed off 😤
